Scott Paper, the company invented the brown cardboard tube around which toilet paper has been rolled since 1890, has reversed course and removed the tube from its Scott Naturals Tube-Free line of toilet paper. This creative way to conserve has spawned a green movement in the sleepy $9B market for toilet paper.
According to the Company, "Over 17 billion toilet paper tubes are thrown away each year. That’s enough to fill the Empire State Building. Twice. By pledging to #TossTheTube for good [which you can do on their website], you can do your part to reduce the tube waste without sacrificing quality."
Initially only available at Wal-Mart in the New York metro area, the Scott Naturals line of tube-less tp is now available in stores nationwide. It may seem like a small thing, but the quote above powerfully illustrates a core belief of of Green Retail Alliance - a billion small actions can have a huge impact on the world we live in.
